3 Tips For Creating An At-Home Workout Space

March 19, 2020 by Ally Leave a Comment

To make working out easier, many people choose to workout at home. However, not everyone has the space within their home to create their own at-home gym. In addition to this, not everyone has the funds to purchase the equipment they would want for their at-home gym. Luckily, there are things you can do to work within both of these parameters.

To help you build muscle and shrink your waistline without having to step foot in a gym, here are three tips for creating your own at-home workout space.

Pick Pieces That Require Minimal Space

If you have an area in your home that you can designate for an at-home gym, then space likely isn’t an issue for you. But if your space at home is limited, you’ll want to choose pieces for your at-home gym that don’t have a large footprint.

According to Sarah Mitroff, a contributor to CNet.com, simple bodyweight exercises don’t require much room at all. You can do things like sit-ups, squats, push-ups, and crunches while taking up very little space in your house. As for getting your cardio in, using something like a jump rope can get your heart rate up without taking up as much space as you would with something like a treadmill or elliptical. Additionally, using bands, free weights, or a pull-up bar can help you build muscle without needing a bench or bar for weightlifting.

Get The Right Flooring

In most homes, the flooring you’ve chosen for your everyday lifestyle likely isn’t ideal for working out on. Because of this, you’ll likely want to get additional flooring options for your home gym space.

Deirdre Sullivan, a contributor to The Spruce, shares that one great option for protecting your floor is to purchase interlocking foam mats that you can fit together in the space you have available to workout. If this seems like too much work for you, you can also use yoga mats to both cushion the floor beneath you as well as have a barrier between your flooring and your workout equipment.

Always Practice Safety

When working out at a gym, you have other people around you to be there in the event of an emergency. But when you’re working out at home by yourself, you need to take additional safety precautions.

To do this, T. Lacoma, a contributor to The Family Handyman, recommends that you take safety precautions like installing a mirror in your workout space, using gloves when working with your hands, and using elastic bands rather than free weights. By taking these safety measures, you’ll have a better chance of preventing injury.

If you want to create an at-home workout space but aren’t quite sure how to do it, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you plan this area in your home.
