3 Things To Consider When Designing Your Own Home From Scratch

January 10, 2020 by Ally Leave a Comment

If you’re about to start planning and building your own home, you are likely feeling both excited and a little nervous. While it can be great to have a home that’s exactly what you want and need, if you don’t have any experience with designing a home, you might make some amateur mistakes that professionals would easily avoid.

So to help ensure that you’re able to have the home of your dreams, here are three things to consider when designing your own home to build from scratch.

Spend Some Time Researching

Before you really start planning anything, Reagan Greer, a contributor to Forbes.com, shares that it’s a good idea to do some research. By looking at home plans and designs that others have used, you can get a better idea of what’s possible and functional for your home.

Some of the best resources you can tap into for your research include looking at sketches or blueprints, reading some home design books, or speaking to professional home builders. Additionally, you could also talk with people you know who’ve built their own homes and see what tips or advice they have to give you regarding the actual building of the structure.

Think About The Present and The Future

When you’re coming up with the layout and design of your home, it’s important that you think not only about what your current needs are, but also what you’ll want or need from your home in the future.

According to Jen Hill, a contributor to Dwell.com, thinking ahead when planning your home can save you a lot of headaches in the future. For example, if you want to have a big playroom for your young kids that you then turn into some kind of studio for yourself, make sure you put this room in the right area of your home so you can get great light both now and later.

Be Smart About Storage Space

For many people, what their home could always use more of is storage space. But while you might be excited about the idea of putting storage space all over in your new home, Jessica Gordon Ryan, a contributor Freshome.com, advises that you find the right balance between storage space and living space.

If you devote too much of your home to storage space, you’ll have less space to actually live in your home. But if you don’t have enough storage space, you’ll end up using some of your living space to store your items. By finding the right balance, you’ll get exactly what you need without any waste or excess.

If you have plans to build and design your own home from scratch, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you do so sucessfully.
