Three Tips When You’re Struggling to Light a Fire

November 26, 2021 by Ally Leave a Comment

Have you ever spent an eternity trying to light a fire, only for it to fizzle out after you finally thought you had it going? Lighting a fire, either in a pit or designated fireplace, is always going to present you with challenges if you don’t come to terms with the basics. Therefore, we’ve put together three top tips that will help you light a long-lasting fire that you will be delighted with.

Ensure air supply

Just like human beings, fire needs a continuous supply of oxygen in order to survive. Blowing your kindling is a handy way to get your fire started, but be careful if you do so inside your home. If you’re lighting up a log burner or fireplace indoors, pop the windows and any air vents open to ensure fresh air is circulating. This will help you start a fire and will ensure it doesn’t just fizzle out.

Stack effectively

Perhaps the most important thing about starting a fire successfully is ensuring your materials are organised correctly. Begin by scrunching up some newspaper and placing the kindling on top in a criss-cross pattern – this is the perfect foundation for your fire and will allow sufficient oxygen into it. You’re then ready to place your main source of fuel on the fire, be it logs or coal, but you shouldn’t overdo it. Start with a maximum of three or four logs, which you should lay on top of the kindling, being mindful you need to leave sufficient space for oxygen to circulate. While you might be surprised to hear that your fire doesn’t need many logs, to begin with, it will actually help you build the perfect fire in the long run.

Select the right fuel

It’s difficult to maintain a decent fire without using the correct materials. As mentioned, you always need some form of kindling, which is undoubtedly the best way to provide your fire with the help it needs to ignite. Our extra-dry, Kiln Dried Kindling provides your fire with the natural start it needs and should be essential material for all home fires. Equally as important is your choice of firewood. You can be sure that our Kiln Dried Firewood is a great choice, as it’s smokeless, sustainable, and effortless to ignite. You will find that it’s the perfect firewood for fires inside or outside and will help you light a fire to be proud of. After all, using insufficient or low-quality fuel will make your fire lighting process much more difficult.

Don’t forget – the best fuel is super important for a fire that goes the distance. Thankfully, our Firelighting and Kiln Dried Firewood collections are precisely what you need to successfully spark up and enjoy your home fire. Check out Homefire’s extensive collection today.
