How To Keep Food Cold in a Broken Fridge

September 22, 2019 by Ally Leave a Comment

When your fridge stops working, the last thing you want is for the food to spoil in the Honolulu heat. Of course, you can call a Honolulu appliance repair specialist and they will get to you as fast as they can, but you still have to try to keep the stocked fridge of food cold until they show up and complete their repairs. There are a few things you can do to keep the perishables from ruining before the repairman arrives. The following are some tips to keep your food cold in a broken fridge.

Keep the door closed

The less you open the door of the fridge, the longer the food inside of it will stay cold. If your fridge is broken and repair is on the way, keep the cool air inside by only opening the door of the fridge if you absolutely have to. The more you open the door, the more cold air seeps out making the fridge hot, and your food a goner. If you do have to open the fridge, take everything that you need for the next hour out, even if you must put it in coolers for a bit. The less you open the fridge door, the better off you are.

Cover the fridge with blankets

You can also take newspapers and blankets you have around the house and wrap the appliance in them. This will help the fridge stay cold while you’re waiting for the repairman to arrive. It will also stop you from going into the fridge too often, because you’ll have to unwrap it to get inside and then rewrap it again.

Purchase and use dry ice

If the appliance repair service you called can’t get out to your home until the next day or a couple of days after, then you should purchase some dry ice and keep your fridge cold with it. It is recommended that you use a 10 pound slab of dry ice for every 12 hours your fridge is out of commission, so that your food will stay cold and not spoil.

Transfer the food to a cooler

If it’s going to be a bit before the repairman arrives, you can grab all of the coolers you have in the house and transfer your food from the fridge to the cooler for safe keeping. Make sure that you pack the cooler with ice or ice packs, and keep changing them out, as they start to melt.

Store the food in a spare fridge

While it’s possible, though not likely, you can move the food to a spare fridge. If you have a fridge in your garage, then it’s a perfect idea to store the food there until the repairman arrives and gets the fridge going for you once again. Remove all of the items, or at least as many as will fit, and put them in the spare fridge for safe-keeping.

Store the food at a friends

Though not the easiest option, if it’s going to be a few days before the appliance repair service can make it out to your home, you might want to check into using a friend or neighbor’s fridge to store your perishables in. It’s either that or try to cook all of the food and eat everything before it goes bad.

These are just a few of the top ways that you can keep food cold when your fridge suddenly stops cooling. If you put the food in a cooler, change the ice as soon as it melts and inspect food carefully before eating it, just in case.
