How Harmful is Garbage in the Environment

July 7, 2019 by Ally Leave a Comment

Humans are the biggest threat to the environment. Technological advancements allowed us to create so many useful things, but these benefits have adverse effects on the planet that we call home. The trash that we produce from the food we eat and things we use ends up where it is not supposed to be, for example, in oceans and other water sources as well as on land where it does not belong. For decades the effects of global warming have worsened, sending people into a panic about how we can reverse its effects. But the damage has been done, and all we can do is to take measures to at least prevent the damage from getting worse. One of the leading causes of global warming is the improper disposal of trash. We can see oceans of trash which kill marine animals and contaminate the food that we eat from the sea. There are so many bad things that happen because we do not throw our trash in the proper places.

Impact on underwater habitats

When garbage ends up in oceans and rivers, the habitat of marine life alters significantly. When trash accumulates, it changes the structures of underwater habitats where marine animals live and multiply. It blocks the light coming from the sun and depletes the oxygen that marine animals need to live. Some oceans and rivers are so deep in trash that they are no longer able to support aquatic life. Imagine a body of water with no creatures in it?

Toxic chemical waste seeps into the soil

Toxic trash such as that coming from factories and hospitals, if not disposed of properly, can seep into the ground, contaminating the soil that supports plant life. Hazardous waste can affect how plants grow, and if we consume them, the dangers will transfer to our bodies.

Animals die of plastic ingestion

How many videos and photos have we seen of marine and land animals dying because of plastic poisoning? Whales die with tons of plastic in their stomachs, turtle shells shrink because of plastic wrapped around them as they are growing, and there are many more instances when innocent animals bear the brunt of human irresponsibility.

The earth looks like a big landfill

When we see places with oceans and mountains of trash, it is because people are not disciplined and responsible enough to dispose of their waste the right way. It makes the earth look like a big landfill, and foul smells come from mounds of trash, which can cause illnesses and even death to humans. Imagine a world without garbage, which ancient people enjoyed thousands of years ago.

In our own little ways, we can reduce the trash we produce. If we create a bulk of waste and we don’t know where to dispose of it, Evergreen Junk Removal can help us dispose of it properly. There is only one planet we live on, so we must do everything in our capacity to protect it from total destruction, one piece of garbage at a time.
