5 Crafting Ideas to Do With Older Loved Ones

February 15, 2023 by Ally Leave a Comment

Crafting is a great way to spend time with older loved ones not only because it’s entertaining, but it’s also a great way to keep their brains active, particularly for loved ones who may require memory care. However, your older loved one may find certain activities more age appropriate and entertaining than others. If you’re looking for ideas on how to spend quality time with your senior family member, here are some crafts for you to consider.

Painting

Painting is something that just about everybody has tried at least once. It’s straightforward, yet it can be hours of entertainment, not to mention something beautiful to look at once it’s completed. From oils to acrylics to watercolors, there are all sorts of different mediums that you can enjoy together.

Ornaments

Ornaments are a fun activity to try out, especially during the holidays. In truth, you can make ornaments any time of year, but it’s much more practical during the holidays since you can offer them as gifts. The truth is that anything can be an ornament as long as it has a hook. From cotton snowmen, to felt angels, get creative with all the different ornaments you can come up with.

Scrapbooking

Past a certain age, chances are that most people will have accumulated a considerable amount of memorabilia. Between keepsakes and photos, many of these things wind up stuffed away in boxes. Scrapbooking is a great way to bring these things back to life and revisit happy memories.

Not only is it a fun activity for older loved ones to revisit their past experiences, but it’s a great way for you to learn more about them. They may have done things you never would have imagined, and going through their scrapbooks may just surprise you how much of a life they truly have lived.

Sock Puppets

Sock puppets are a fun activity, not to mention a great way to entertain grandkids. You can have fun with everything from googly eyeballs to pipe cleaner arms. This craft is on the lighthearted side, so if you have a loved one who is particularly silly, then this one’s for you. Just make sure that you put on a performance once your creations are complete. Otherwise, where is the fun?

Rock Painting

Rock painting is an extremely popular craft and for good reason! The tiny detail can be extremely fun, particularly with the right tools. Acrylic fine tip pens are a great way to paint rocks. From highly detailed mandalas to turning them into animals, rock painting can be a great creative outlet.

They can also be a great way to decorate your backyard. Sprinkle them throughout your garden as a fun way to add color and creativity!
