New Engand Summer Thursday

This is the last in our summer series about New England.  Today, I want to talk about Lake Winnepesaukee.  (Here's how we say the name up he-yah: Winnepeh-sock-ee).
Clouds over a different New Hamsphire lake; Lake Pawtuckaway.
I know; it's not Winnepesaukee.  I don't have photos of that.  I like to use my own photos as much as possible, what can I say?
  • The largest lake in New Hampshire is Lake Winnipesaukee.  It's about 21 miles long, up to 9 miles wide in some places, and has over 200 miles of shore line.
  • The lake also has over 300 islands; approximately 274 of them are inhabitable!  Check out this real estate site to take a peek at some listings for homes on the islands.
  • Lake Winnipesauke and Squam Lake were used in the film On Golden Pond.
  • Remember the 1991 film What About Bob?  That was set at Lake Winnepesaukee; however, the actual filming took place on a lake in Virginia.  (Hrrrmphh!)
  • Thornton Wilder's famous play, Our Town, has a reference to Lake Winnepesaukee.
  • The M/V Sophie C. is a boat that delivers mail to residents of the islands of Lake Winnipesaukee from June through September.  Mail service began in 1892.  This is one of only two floating post offices in the United States (the other is in Michigan).
Have you ever been to Lake Winnepesauke?  Have you ever heard of it?

I've been there. Actually it's the only place in NH that I've been - my aunt and uncle own a house there outside Wolfeboro. It is gorgeous up there.

Yes, indeed. I was there for the first time this summer as a matter of fact. I wrote a post about it, of course.

We had a great time. I always enjoy visiting New Hampshire.

I have only been through watching "What About Bob" which is one of my favorite movies! It looks beautiful!

Well, I would love to visit in person. But like Amanda's comment before me, I have seen it when watching "What about Bob?"

Looks like the clouds will pop out of those pictures. So serene and beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

I am hosting my first Link-up party - Tea Time Thursdays. Would be glad to see you there :)

Isn't there a song about Lake Winnipesaukee, or I am I making this up? I can almost hear the melody in my head.

What About Bob is hilarious. Why do they make movies about one place, and film it at another? Parts of Dirty Dancing (about the Catskills) were filmed in the NC mountains.

I have a friend who moved to San Francisco and she said what she missed about living in the East was the cumulus clouds.

I've been to Lake Winnapasaukee (sp?). I went there with a friend who's family had a lovely old lodge-style home right on the lake. This was in the mid-70's. The family had had the home for a couple of generations and it was a big place and lots of fun.

Spent my youth and teen years around Lake Winnepesaukee/Laconia. My parents & grandparents both had camps in Gilmanton, we summered every year in NH (my mother's family native new englanders, from NH and MASS). I went to junior high in Laconia, swam many a summer at Winnepesaukee and there used to be a teeny tiny chinese restaurant we went to all the time near the lake. Oh, good times!!!
