Before and After, The Outside of our House

This post could also have the title: "I can't believe we bought this house."

Or: "I can't believe I'm showing this picture."

What I am about to show you is really, really embarrassing...but hey, we're all friends here, right?

Even Handy Man said "Don't do it!!"

Here was our current house, when we first bought it back in 2005:
What were we thinking?

...and here it is, after we did a TON of work fixing up outside the house, and the yard:
Here are some of the things we did to fix up the outside:
  • We got a new roof.  Besides the mildew on the roof, we had some leaks.
  • Hosed down the siding to clean it up
  • Washed all the windows
  • Scraped the paint off the steps, and put a new grey stain on
  • Put up new outside lights.  Actually, one of the first things we did was to take down the old brass lights, and put the new ones up, so the new lights are in the "before" photo.
  • Put up the American flag, which is also in the "before" photo
  • Took down the red plastic shutters that were painted red.  Yes, someone painted plastic shutters.  We installed new black shutters
  • Handy Man did a lot of work fixing up the lawn
  • Tore out the old, crumbly, brick pathway (You can see photos of the new stone path here).
  • Tore out all the old, scraggly bushes and planted a new bed with mulch
  • Had gutters installed (for practical purposes, so water would run away from the house).
  • Installed new screen doors and a front and side door
  • Put up a house number on the siding
Let's take a look again:
I'm sure when Handy Man sees this post, he will point out a few things I may have missed.  He'll also complain about the before photo.

What do you think?  Would you have bought the "before" house?  Let me tell you, the inside wasn't much better, but we'll get to that another time...

You're kidding me right? That house looked greateven before. Ok..not great, but its no way as bad as you think.

I certainly do not think that you're crazy! Of course Honey and I bought a house that basically needed gutting in most rooms and we had no idea how big the backyard was because of all the holly bushes, so I am perhaps not the best judge of house-sanity. But I think that your home is beautiful. I am sure that you put in so much work, but now you can enjoy the fruits of your labors! :-)

Girl, I would have taken the before too! You should see my exterior! Anyhow, it is gorgeous and you did a great job. LOVE the black shutters.

The "before" isn't nearly that bad! Its a classic shape and style, and doesn't look like it needed anything too serious. Of course, your after is much better! Why on earth everyone painted their porches and decks "Redwood" back in the day is beyond me.

It's beautiful now!

I have long wondered what is different about roofs today that they almost ALL end up with that weird streaking? You didn't see that decades ago did you?

Looks gorgeous now!

But without showing the before pic we wouldn't be able to see how much you guys have worked your tails off to make a beautiful after picture. Besides, not everyone can see the after when they're looking at the before (man, I hope that makes sense to someone other then myself.) Amazing job!!!

I am awed by the amount of improvement that you've done to your lovely home over the years! I know it's a fantastic feeling of accomplishment and adds to making a house feel like a home. I think someone else has already said it, but I do appreciate the black shutters.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. Your before picture is not as bad as you think!! I bet mine is worse, as we've yet to begin progress on the exterior. We bought our house in January and it's just begining to get nice out! I'll be blogging about my own adventures in renovating too! I'll be sure to follow you now!

I love the new shutters. I run a company in the UK that creates bespoke shutters. Those black ones are lovely did you fit them yourselves?
