To Bathe or Not to Bathe

Phew, have we been busy lately!  We have lots of projects going on.  When the weather gets better, we'll be able to do some larger projects, and of course we'll share them here.

One of the projects we need to do is to take out our upstairs bathtub and shower.  It's a long story, which I will post about another time.  We sort of made a mistake (oops), and need to rip it out.

The shower that we have is a standard shower, with a bath tub, with a shower rod and curtain.  It's even set into a nook like this:

We are shopping around, and thinking about buying a walk-in shower, sort of like this one:

Some of you might be thinking "No! Don't take out a bath tub!"  However, we never take baths.  Ever.  If we ever feel the need to take a bath, we have a tub in the downstairs bathroom.

Changes like this might or might not affect the resale value of our house; but we are not concerned with that.  We don't want to make changes (or not make changes) just because it might affect resale value.  We don't make out of the ordinary changes to the house in any other way, so I'm not worried how this might affect resale value.

Do you have a walk in shower? Do you like it? Have you ever taken out a bath tub to add one?  What do you think?

i would kill for a tiled walk in shower with glass doors and two shower heads with a built in seat to sit and shave! do you have a second bathroom with a tub? that's enough tub in one house. i won't have one in my next house. i'm with you!

In our "master" bathroom we have no tub...we can barely get IN our shower! We are happy to have a master bathroom, since we didn't at our last house. It's also motivating to make sure I don't gain any weight cause I'd never fit in there if I did! Ha, ha! So, technically we have a walk in shower, but it's not fancy or anything!

Take it out. I think the walk-in will be great, especially if you have another bath with a tub...just in case.

My in-laws don't have a tub in their house at all (unless you count the hot tub). They all love it. We are putting in a small walk-in shower in a mudroom/bathroom we are doing now. The other two have the shower/tub combo. I love the curved shower curtain!!

WOW, that first photo looked just like your bathroom...and I thought "why in the world do they have the shower curtain"..ha ha!!

We are in the process of getting estimates to re-do our master and are contemplating just doing a large walk in shower...but are still undecided!

I'm in a house with a shower stall upstairs and a combo tub/shower downstairs. When we bought the house I wasn't too sure about not having a tub in both bathrooms, but it's worked fine. I don't think it should effect resale since you still have a tub in the house.

We are going through the exact same dilemma at our house. We even attended a home show last weekend and got estimates on the cost for replacing a tub/shower combo with a walk-in shower.

It could run between $2,000 and $5,000 for the one-day deal. We're going to talk to a contractor we've worked with before and get his price.

Since we have another full bath with a shower/tub combo, a realtor friend said we would increase the home's appeal to future buyers (even though we don't intend to move) by having a walk-in. Older people want it, and most Americans shower instead of take baths.

Do it, and take us along for the ride.

Today's headline is irresistible.

I would love the walk in shower, as long as I had a bath in the house somewhere else...so I'm with you!

I also completely agree with you about making the changes YOU want and not just worrying about "resale"!!! Kuddos to yoU!!!

i like the walk in shower, and as long as you have a bathtub SOMEwhere, i think you'd be good. if you do walk in shower, and it's possible, i'd do glass doors instead of curtains to really highlight it. can't wait to see what you do!

Get an estimate for having the shower tiled. You can go very high end with tile or very economical. You can then not have that lip to trip over. A glass half door so you don't have to fight the shower curtain, it's not so dark and you won't need 6 lights in there.

I don't think there is a problem removing a bathtub, as long as there is another tub in the house. Although, a lot of people insist on a bathtub in the master bathroom.

I think it you are going to do a walk-in shower, it needs to look high end. That means glass doors and natural stone or glass tile. I mean, if you are going to do it, go all the way. You can do it yourself: waterproof backerboard, watertight membrane, nice tile..it would be a great project for you.

I just replaced my tub with a walk in shower. I have a bath tub in another bathroom, so like you, if I need a bubble bath I can still take one.
It's the best thing ever! I love it. Go for it!

I want one!! Ever since I heard about them, I've wanted one. Can't afford it, of course, but it will always be on my wish list. I would take the tub out of the guest bathroom and put the walk-in shower there. There's a bathtub in the master bathroom, and I never take baths (I'm older, and have trouble getting up and down).
