Do You Have a Dumping Ground?

Do you have an area in your home that is a dumping ground?  A closet, a table, an area, or even a room where you shove your "stuff?"

Here's a photo of part of our dumping ground.  It's in our family room addition that we don't really use right now.
When we first moved in, we used the room.  However, when the cost of oil heat went through the roof, we closed it off and turned the heat off in that room.  (Handy Man drained the water out of the baseboard heating system so the pipes wouldn't freeze.  The room is above the garage, which gets cold in the winter.)

Ok, what was I talking about?  Oh, right.  Our dumping ground.  This is an old desk that somehow ended up in that room.  And this is the desk after I had cleaned a bunch of random stuff off of it.

I've been working on the room slowly, since it's so cold out there.  There are other spots in the room where we've dumped "stuff," I just didn't take any pictures of it.

Do you have a dumping ground?  Where is it?  What's on it?  Have you resolved to clean it up in 2011?

LOL - oh boy, did I ever. Happily, my dumping ground is now the guest room and by this summer will be my daughter's new "big girl" room but for a while - whew...it was a mess!

Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself - http://almost-organized.blogspot.com/2010/12/guest-room.html (the room was being used as "pending a trip to Goodwill" storage)

I think you can answer this one for me....my BASEMENT! It's so easy to just put stuff there and close the door and then it's forgotten. I've tried to be MUCH better about it since summer time. After all, it is a finished basement & fully usable, when not covered in crap.

The basement! And it's finished, too, which makes it seem even worse. We were redoing part of the upstairs to make better bedrooms, and so we had to move a ton of stuff to... somewhere. So for a long time, the basement was temporary storage and it's hard to get past that.

I have a few different areas that I'd call my dumping grounds, all of varying size and level of catastrophe.

There's the ktichen desk, just inside the garage door, that catches purses, wallets, cell phones, mail, newspapers, school papers, grocery sacks, camera electroncis, etc,

Then there's the desk in the study, which catches all the mail that's been sorted as a "save" piece, printer outputs that have mistakes, candy and snack wrappers form our daughter, old magazines, work papers from my husband, un-used out of season decorations from the rest of the house, books that have been read, books that haven't been read, etc.

There's the chair and ottoman in the bedroom that catches suit jackets, dry-clean-only sweaters, work out clothes, other clothes that need to be hung up, etc.

There's the unfinished room in the basement, capturing old furniture, tools, ...

There's the craft table...

There's the bathroom cabinet...

There's the kitchen junk drawers (four of them!)...

Oh. My. Gosh. I had no idea how bad it was!!!
