Simple Christmas Advent Calendar

I almost feel funny posting this craft, because I didn't make it myself.  My sister-in-law Magdalena bought this for Handy Boy at a church craft fair.  (See here and here for two of Magdalena's recipes, and see here for her simple Christmas decorations).

However, this was so cute, I just had to share it!  This Advent Calendar is a very cute, simple craft to make.  It's made out of matchboxes, Christmas wrapping paper, and a wooden base.

The matchbooks are glued together, and each row is wrapped in Christmas paper.  Each layer is glued to the next one. The whole thing is glued to a painted wooden base.

This crafter wrote numbers from 1 to 25 on the ends of each matchbox with a marker.  The numbers are all in mixed-up order; this makes it fun for children to find the next number.  Each matchbox has a tiny item inside.

Handy Boy has used great restraint and hasn't peeked inside the boxes yet. While he was asleep, I peeked to see what was inside:
  • individually wrapped lifesavers
  • small Christmas erasers
  • holographic stickers
  • Silly Bandz (bracelets that kids are CRAZY over right now)
  • small, puffy stickers
You could also put coins in the matchboxes.  I just thought that it was a cute idea that I wanted to share.

Coming over from My Backyard Eden! Love this! I made one last year for my boys and they had such a great time getting the goodies out each day!

That is so cute! And it's probably small enough to fit in any corner that need "Christmas-ifying". Thanks to you and your sis-in-law for the great idea! Now where can I get some matchbooks....?

I love that idea. Advent Calendars is one of the many Christmas things I collect. We have many at our house. Some just simple ones that keep track of the date no prize to an elaborate one from Restoration Hardware that has doors that open and gives up a prize.

This IS cute! I love how it is a small surprise for the kids. Lots of times, it has to be a huge, big, grand thing, but small is not bad once in awhile. It might even be fun to fill the boxes with acts of service the kids could do for other family members or neighbors. Love this idea! Thanks for sharing!
